“The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena… Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.”
Metaverse Studios used the above quote from Carl Sagan to create Angelic, its NFT-powered sci-fi RPG. Beautifully crafted, the game—as presaged by the Sagan quote—asks players to see beyond their everyday conceptions of space and time.
Many people in the NFT- and crypto industry had to adjust their views due to current market turmoil. We were able to speak with Angelic’s Director of Operations, Anastasia Volgemut, on the current uncertainty in the market, how Angelic has evolved and what lies ahead for both the game and the industry at large.
What was the motivation for Angelic to switch from Solana to cross-chain?
My decision to expand Angelic Multi-chain was inspired by the idea that everyone should have equal access to all aspects of our universe’s gameplay. Angelic has the opportunity to tap into a wider gaming community through guilds and education.
Is it different to play a single-chain game or a multichain? What changes will players notice?
When describing Angelic, I always begin with “we’re a game first and blockchain second,” or, simply put, “chain agnostic,” with no blockchain components visible to the untrained eye. We want traditional gamers to be able to enjoy and focus on gameplay just as much as the web3 community. Angelic will store all in-game NFTs acquired by our players via a custom back end wallet. This will allow them to access their data whenever they want to explore and learn about web3.
What has your community done to react to the news?
Our community is always informed about major developments in the roadmap. We communicate regularly with them. We received positive feedback from the community, especially after we shared our partnership with ImmutableX. This is a top game-oriented Layer-2 scaling solution for NFTs on Ethereum. I sought out a partner that could not only provide an ecosystem for Angelic, but also for gamers. Gamers will now be able to enjoy gas-free mining and secure solutions tailored to traditional players.
You came out very strongly against Magic Eden’s decision to make royalty payments optional on its platform. What do you think is the worst precedent for the industry?
Many creators and small projects are involved in this industry. They spend many weeks, if not months creating amazing artwork to get their work recognized and valued. Owning one’s work and the rights to it is also one of the fundamental principles that bred the idea of a decentralized network — not to mention that the majority of creators rely on royalties as a way of generating a sustainable income.
Marketplaces should not be forced to remove creators from their autonomy. Instead, they should eliminate all fees. This will show community support and help to sustain the ecosystem in uncertain times.
Angelic is the victim of the current market turmoil.
Developing a game isn’t easy. Developing a Triple-A narrative, strategy RPG that’s backed by blockchain in a bear market while watching the second-largest exchange in the world disintegrate in a matter of days right before our very eyes — well I’m sure we’ve all felt similar things and experienced the same uncertainty over the last few weeks.
The impact on Angelic and other gaming projects is unknown. After carefully considering our goals and values, we decided that the best way forward was to continue building on and delivering our milestones as much as possible. Angelic would continue to be a high-quality game even if blockchain died tomorrow. This is why I believe that Angelic will always remain a great game.
How supportive has Angelic’s ecosystem been during this time and what is next on the roadmap for Angelic?
“You’re only as strong as your weakest link,” is the general mindset I have been seeing emerge over the last few weeks, both from the community and our partners alike. I think what defines an effective and supportive ecosystem is not what happens when everything is good, it’s how we respond to one another when things are bad. Angelic is open to working with like-minded partners who support one another and offer their assistance in any way possible, particularly our closest advisors and lead investors.
These last weeks saw many companies, great people, and projects suffer huge losses. It would be a shame to let one person’s actions define blockchain and all the progress made in Web3 up until this point. Angelic will keep building in order to fulfill our goal to bring an incredible gaming experience to web3 and traditional gamers. Keep an eye out for Angelic Arena’s launch in Q1 2023.
